Deniza Popova sings what she explores! She was born in Bulgaria and grew up in Northern Germany. In Berlin she studied singing at the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music, then musicology, ethnomusicology and Bulgarian studies at the Humboldt University and Free University of Berlin. She wrote her doctoral thesis on authenticity, mediality and identity of “Bulgarian music”. Since 2004 she has been working with the Russian-Ukrainian ensemble for authentic folk music POLYNUSHKA and since 2005 with DIAKRITOS, an ensemble exploring the musical dialogue between the Jewish-Christian-Muslim-Hindu faiths. In the Bulgarian church she practices the ancient Byzantine church music tradition. She is committed to communicative musical events and innovative ways. She teaches in combination of scientific and artistic work at universities, colleges and broadly-effective in music education in Germany and Bulgaria.

Ihre Doktorarbeit widmete sich der Authentizität, Medialität und Identität „bulgarischer Musik“. Sie initiierte mehrere Ensembles und ist seit 2004 Mitglied von POLYNUSHKA (authentische ukrainische und russische Folklore), seit 2005 von DIAKRITOS (Musikalischer Dialog: Jüdisch, Mus- limisch, Christlich und Hinduistisch) und seit 2013 von Ensemble ŚABDAGATITĀRA, wo sie auf der Grundlage künstlerischer Forschung arbeitet. Deniza Popova knüpft an die traditionellen Funktionen und Situationen von Musik an und organisiert daraus vielfältige kommunikative musikalische Veranstaltungen, die alte Kontexte erhalten und innovative Wege eröffnen. Für ihre sowohl musikwissenschaftlichen wie künstlerischen Publikationen gründete sie ihr eigenes Label. Theorie und Praxis verbindet sie auch in ihrer Lehrtätigkeit an Universitäten, Hochschulen, in der Sozialpädagogik und an Schulen in Deutschland und in Bulgarien.
